Gambling Recovery

Compulsive gambling is a purely emotional problem, therefore to combat it a trained professional in emotional issues is needed. It is best to find one who specializes in gambling. Without this experienced mind who has tackled the problem, it may be difficult even for the most determined addict to recover.

At the height of a gambling problem, compulsive gamblers feel a sense of lost possibility and lost control of their life. At this point they no longer care about making rational decisions, their is no motivation to do so, all potential they ever saw in themselves is in the past. This creates and exacerbates the emotional issues.

The problem gambler will have to deal with lost trust from the people(and family) that were once close to him/her. They will have to create a roadmap to achieve this goal because it has a high impact on the feeling of self-worth. Psychologically, when people expect no better from you and you expect no better from yourself, you cannot recover. You are incapable of proving a point.

The gambler also has to deal with the urges to gamble. Many do not even know what drives the urges. This is an area that a trained professional can be most helpful with. Failing to identify the cause of the urges is fatal. It is like trying to fight the smoke without killing off the fire.

Most research and feedback from professionals that help gamblers point to stress as the main urge to gamble. Gambling becomes the way to let off the stem. This is a complicated chain-link because to successfully help the gambler now also requires helping them to deal with stress, at least during the recovery period.

On a more individual level, gambling addicts are encouraged to be honest with themselves and those around them. Honest with what they do and what their true feelings are. Honesty is the key to self-therapy. As long as one does not recognise the truths about themselves, they are incapable of kicking the habit. Honesty in this case far more than admitting that one has a problem.

Finally any recovery program must deal with relapse prevention. Just like alcoholics, a gambling addict is always an addict. They are incapable of leisure gambling or one off bets. They always fall back to their old ways if they don't fully stay away from gambling.
